Dimexon director Rajiv Mehta attended a momentous occasion in the diamond industry on February 25, 2025: the official signing of the long-term agreement between the Government of Botswana and De Beers. This landmark event, held in Gaborone, solidified a 10-year sales agreement that reaffirms Botswana’s status as a global leader in natural diamonds and underscores the country’s commitment to responsible diamond mining and economic prosperity.

The agreement represents a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between Botswana and De Beers, reinforcing their shared vision for a sustainable and ethical diamond industry. Under the terms of the agreement, De Beers will continue to source rough diamonds from Debswana, a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government. The agreement also increases the share of diamonds allocated to Botswana’s state-owned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) to 30%, ensuring greater beneficiation for the country.

Furthermore, De Beers has committed to creating a Diamonds for Development Fund with an initial investment of BWP 1 billion ($75 million). This will support economic growth, diversification and jobs in Botswana in line with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and National Development Plan.

By securing a steady flow of diamond revenues, the agreement will significantly contribute to Botswana’s economic growth, funding vital sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The partnership strengthens Botswana’s ability to create sustainable economic opportunities, ensuring that the benefits of diamond mining are widely shared across the nation.

The event attended by Rajiv Mehta was marked by a sense of celebration and optimism, with key stakeholders in attendance, including government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from diamond mining companies. Among the highlights of the evening was a powerful speech delivered by Botswana’s Minister of Mines, Bogolo Kenewendo, at the Gala Dinner. Her remarks emphasised Botswana’s unwavering commitment to natural diamonds and the profound impact the industry has had on local communities.

Minister Kenewendo passionately conveyed the importance of marketing natural diamonds worldwide, stating that “a natural diamond is the only gem that belongs on a finger, on a ring”. She underscored how the sparkle of a diamond is not just about aesthetics but about the tangible benefits it brings to people’s lives. The natural diamond industry is responsible for creating millions of jobs, and uplifting entire communities, such as Botswana.
